Amigurumi mary river turtle free crochet

This quirky reptile lives in the Mary River in Australia, growing
its distinctive head of algae hair only in these waters. Doesn’t
it look like something from a fantasy film? This punky hairdo
isn’t the only odd thing about this species. These turtles have
two ways of breathing: as well as breathing in air like we do,
they can also take water into their cloaca tail opening and
extract oxygen straight from the water. The longest recorded
time a Mary River turtle spent under water is three whole
days – very impressive indeed!

Only identified as a species in
1994, the Mary River turtle is one
of Australia’s largest freshwater
turtles. Their shells can grow to
nearly 50cm (20in) long.
Tension (gauge)
Tension is not critical for this project, but, if you want to match the
pattern shown here, make a small circular swatch using the chosen
yarn and hook (see Tools and materials: Tension swatch for the
swatch pattern).
When made in DK weight cotton with a 3mm (US C/2 or D/3) hook
the swatch should measure 3.5cm (1⅜in) across.
Project notes
This project uses slip stitches to
join in the individual pieces under
the big shell. Decorate your turtle’s
shell with embroidered patterns
and add as much green hair as you
like!

Final details
Embroider some nostrils in Lilac yarn: mark out two circles, then
wrap yarn around each circle to raise the edges. (photos 13 and 14)

Cut some small strands of Lime yarn and any extra mohair or other
textured green yarns and add them to the top of the head to make
the punk haircut. (photos 15 and 16)

Pinch the tip of each foot and embroider them with Purple yarn to
look like flippers. Secure the embroidered lines with a tiny claw at
each end. Make the claws by overlapping a couple of short stitches
over the same spot. (photos 17 and 18)

Sew the barbels to the front of the head and embroider a smile in
Purple yarn. (photo 19)

Decorate the shell with some Lilac yarn embroidery and, if you like,
more green tufts of hair to finish your turtle! (photo 20
